Map Description

As a result of featuring the highest mountain range in Ireland, Sheet 78 is one of the best selling Discovery Series maps. This map is drawn on a scale of 1:50,000 and features Carrauntoohil, the MacGillycuddy's Reeks and other big walking attractions such as the Killarney National Park, the Kerry Way and the Dunkerron Mountains.

Carrauntoohil and the MacGillycuddy's Reeks

Carrauntoohil stands at 1,040m and is the highest mountain in Ireland. Many of the other surrounding summits are also higher than any other mountain range in the country. There are a few variations on horseshoe ridge walks that tie many of these peaks in one long walk. This adds to the popularity and makes them one of the most climbed mountain ranges in Ireland. Without any trail signage however, these mountains are only recommended for walkers that have the sufficient navigation skills and experience.

Killarney National Park

Located to the east of the MacGillycudddy's Reeks is Killarney National Park. Over 10,000 hectares in size, it includes popular mountains such as Mangerton, Torc, Tomies Mountain and Purple Mountain as well as the famous Lakes of Killarney. In addition to the rugged wilderness of the mountainside are the more refined attactions of Muckross House and Gardens, Killarney House and Gardens, Knockreer House and Ross Castle.

The Kerry Way / Slí Uibh Ráthach

With the start and finish in Killarney, approximately half of the Kerry Way features on Sheet 78. This includes the first three stages, from Killarney through Black Valley, Glencar and on to Glenbeigh, as well as the final stage from Kenmare back into Killarney.

The Dunkerron Mountains

Although they are not as heavily visited as the neighbs, the MacGillycuddy's Reeks, the Dunkerrons are nonetheless a formidable mountain range. There are over 30 summits in the range of 500m - 800m.

Sheet 78 is available in either a waterproof finish or in a standard paper finish. Unless the map is laminated, it is always recommended to carry the map in a plastic case to maximise its longevity.
