Map Description

Drawn to a scale of 1:50,000, this map covers the less-visited mountains that are south of Lugnaquillia in County Wicklow. The largest of these are Croaghanmoira, Keadeen and Croaghan Kinsella. The southern section of the Wicklow Way, the Tinahely Trails and Avondale Forest Park are the other main attractions that feature on Sheet 62.

Croaghanmoira, Croghan Kinsella and Keadeen

Of the mountains that feature on Sheet 62, it is these three 600m+ summits that capture the interest of most of the more adventurous hillwalking clubs. Keadeen is located to the southwest of Lugnaquillia and straddles Sheets 56 and 62. It provides a steep and challenging climb. Croaghanmoira and the Fananieren ridge are one of the more rewarding ridgewalks that County Wicklow.

The Tinahely Loop Walks

In 2009, Tinahely was chosen to be part of a Discover Ireland pilot program to act as a 'Walkers Welcome' hub. The strong community involvement and agreements with farmers to access their property has provided a strong platform to develop some great countryside walks. All of these trails feature on Sheet 62 - the Ballycumber Loop Walk, the Kyle Loop, Mangan's Loop and the Tinahely Railway Walk.

Avondale Forest Park

Although it is probably more widely-known for the 18th Century Georgian house where Charles Stewart Parnell was born, the adjoining park has a wealth of signposted forest trails. Avondale Forest Park is located just outside Rathdrum and has over 500 acres of mixed forestry. There are seven different signposted trails that lead around the park and down to the Avonmore River which forms one of the boundaries to the estate.

*In order to maximise the longevity of any map, it is always recommended to keep it sealed in a plastic map case when using it in the great outdoors.

The Wicklow Way

Renowned for being the oldest of Ireland's long-distance walking trails, the first section of the Wicklow Way opened in 1980. The southernmost section of this trail is covered on Sheet 62. Starting from Slieve Maan, just south of Glenmalure, it continues on until where the map stops short of Clonegal. The final kilometer of this can be found on Sheet 63.
